SP’s 60th Anniversary

SP-60-Banner

Dear All,

Time really flies when we are having fun.

When our PCEO Mr Tan Choon Shian first announced that we would be celebrating Singapore Polytechnic's 60th anniversary in 2014, there was excitement in the air.

From organising the SP@60 song writing contest in November 2013 to the SP@60 Staff Appreciation Dinner in October 2014, many of our staff, students and alumni had to put in extra time and efforts to deliver the best.  I thank you for your dedication and commitment.

We started off the celebrations with a line-up of competitions.  There were contests to design the official SP@60 logo and tagline, compose the SP@60 song and design the SP@60 cake.  Participation came from all parties and the outcomes were amazing, to say the least.

Events to celebrate SP's 60th anniversary were aplenty.  We started off 2014 by celebrating the birthdays of staff members who also turned 60 that year.  Thereafter, we unveiled the new SP Vision and introduced the My SP Memories website which was developed to house memories gathered from the SP community.  In July, we held the Poly 60 Campus Relay, tree-planting by our Board of Governors and launched Go Green Committee's coffee table book – Campus in a Garden.  Soon after, in August, there was the 17-km Heritage Trail Walk from former SP campuses to the Dover Road campus which saw about 600 participants taking part; and it took about 4-5 hours to complete the entire journey!

The following month in September, we welcomed a new building on campus – the SP Design School.  In addition, there was SP's first ever Grand Alumni Homecoming Dinner, participated by more than 700 alumni and staff members.  At this campus event, SP paid tribute to 41 SP graduates and two registered societies – all of whom had made significant contributions to their alma mater.

The finale was none other than the SP@60 Staff Appreciation Dinner.  About 1,400 staff members participated in this grand event.  Colleagues who turned up in costumes were truly spectacular; they certainly made us travel back in time – 60 years to be exact.

Celebrations were of course incomplete without memorabilia.  Staff, students and graduates all received the specially designed SP@60 T-shirt and the limited-edition eau de toilette 'SPLASH' - a fragrance specially formulated to celebrate SP's 60th anniversary.  We also launched BOMBA, an SP-centric memory card game co-created by the SP Memory Project team as well as students and staff members from the SP Design School and Social Innovation Project (SIP) team.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the committee members who have jumped on the bandwagon with me to organise these SP@60 events.  In addition, I must thank all of you who have participated.  You have made these events successful and memorable!

May SP continue to shine for the next 60 years and beyond.
